"Fortress Besieged" is a classic work by Qian Zhongshu, known as the "New Scholars History". When I first read "Fortress Besieged", I was captivated by its humorous and sarcastic language, as well as the delicate portrayal of characters. Upon rereading, I was more deeply impressed by the fleeting warmth of human relationships and the harsh realities of life it conveyed.
The word "fortress besieged" appears infrequently in the book, but its symbolic meaning permeates the entire narrative. Marriage is a fortress besieged, work is a fortress besieged, and life itself is a fortress besieged. Those outside want to get in, while those inside want to get out. Qian Zhongshu skillfully captures this helplessness and longing for life through his unique satirical technique.
