《遠大前程》的英語讀后感 1
Great Expectations tells the story about a young man called Pip. By telling us the childhood and great expectations of Pip, the author Charles Dickens, who was a famous English writer in 19th century showed us how a young man led a life in capitalistic society.
Pip was born in a poor family. He lost his parents as well as five little brothers in his infancy. As a result, he was brought up by his sister and her husband Mr. Joe Gargery.
Mrs. Gargery was really a strong and respectable woman. Although sometimes she was strict and cruel with Pip, she loved him very much. She was forced to do so by life for she had so heavy a burden on her shoulder to make a man out of a boy. Life was hard to her but she never gave up, otherwise Pip and Joe couldn’t manage to go on with life. That was one reason why her death shocked Joe and Pip so deeply.
Joe, from beginning to end, was a true gentle man. He loved Pip very much and gave a lot of help to him. In Pip’s infancy, they were both brought up by Mrs. Gargery by hands. In Pip’s words, they were fellow-sufferers. He always stood with Pip though thus might offend his wife. When Pip found his great expectation, Joe chose to let Pip loose. He wanted Pop to deal with the good fortune all by himself. He even refused the money Miss Havisham offered him for bringing up Pip. We understand him because we all know that he brought up Pip just for Pip not for money. Joe got married to Biddy at the end of the story . He really deserved happiness.
Pip was the main character of this novel. He had a poor infancy and always sreamt o f becoming rich. He happened to have helped a prisoner who had managed to escape from the prison and needed help badly. Pip might had never thought this would change his life and the prisoner would become
《遠大前程》的英語讀后感 2
Dickens is not a writer disdaining women. Instead he loves, respects and takes care of them, however, in his novels, he unconsciously degrades women and puts them inferior to men. This time I want to adopt Great Expectations to evidence my thesis. Two reasons account for this. The Victorian Age pushed women back to home and indulge in their obedience and docility. An able woman today may be sung highly as a model of independence but male dominated that period even a little bit of rebellion from female world is regarded as the despising of sacred belief. The other one lies in that Dickens, as a well-known and truly successful writer, composes various and popular works. As a male, his achievement sounds great, which belittles the rest of his contemporaries, let alone the women. His success made him believe in men’s great ability.
There are three aspects in this novel that I believe this kind of thought of Dickens is revealed. The first one is that women are fragile. “ Weaker, your name is woman.” Two hundreds ago, Shakespeare authored to the world this unprecedented sentence in Hamlet. Later, Dickens followed this great instruction unconsciously in creating his own works. That is not because that women are in lack of will but that they need surviving abilities and that of self-survival and struggle against destiny. They always turn to men. That can be called “hero saving the beauty”。 This notion originated in the Greek tales but is still adopted successively. The only difference between them lies in the plot and structure. Estella is adopted and trained to break men’s hearts by Miss Havisham. Havisham revenges men and marries Estella to an unworthy guy though Pip deeply loves Estella. Nothing can be bitterer than see his lover married to another guy for a man. Pip really fell into the despair of losing Estella. However, Estella suffers a lot and begins to regret for her initial choice for her spouse and begins to treasure Then comes my second point. Facing destiny women are physically and intellectually inferior to men. Actually it does not mean they have an inferior intelligence but that it seems so. Or we can say that both men and women have the same potential of intelligence, but women never show a lot. God create everyone equally but not everyone is granted the same approaches to success or achievements. They are restricted to families, which restrict them from showing a lot. They can cook food well, which is one standard for their excellence but not the one for male’s world. The novel goes this way since it implies the male consciousness. The ordinary intelligence of women in marriage and love is exposed completely. Havisham is abandoned on her wedding day, but she keeps the room like the day she got married, while on the other hand she tries every means to revenge men. Bearing these two conflictive thoughts in mind, Havisham certainly fails to live her own life out of the control or influence from male though she se The discipline for women is my third point. A feminist De Bufuwa says, ‘One is called woman because she is “made” not “born”’。 Culturally woman is the product of society and the result of its strict restrictions. Those women who do not obey the disciplines are not regarded as gracious or good women by social criteria, which emphasizes on families, the responsibilities for their husbands and their dependence on men. In Great Expectations, Estella and Havisham’s misfortunes are closely attached to love and marriage. They try to revenge men and but they cannot leave men. Estella leaves Pip but at last comes back to him, and Havisham keeps thinking about her marriage day and her the other part, who should come that day, in that gloomy room though she on the other hand revenges men. So tracing the track of a decent woman is the priority for women, as revealed in Dickens’ novel, otherwise tribulation falls.
Every period has an outstanding feature, which make descendants linger in mind. Victorian Age passed long ago, but its typical rules for women still work to some extent. To learn this novel can help us in understanding better women’s efforts to stand up. Society presses public to believe in notion that male play a dominant role. Even a feminist will drop into that swirl as she sees more and thinks more. Havisham can symbolize a feminist but what then? She needs a male accompany. Her ending somewhat is tragic but Estella harvests through a long time, but anyway she wins in depending man and leading a pleasant life. The above is what I get from the novel in the textbook and to conclude my opinion in one sentence, I should say that women depend on men. That is not my opinion, but what I get. I have to mention that again since I myself am one part of that group and I am not willing to take a subordinate role in both family and society.
《遠大前程》的英語讀后感 3
In this summer holidays, I read a book called < Great Expectations>, it was written by Charles Dickens, one of the most famous English writers. He wrote lots of wonderful novels. This book is one of his compositions. People always like to compare with their friends. It is a big foible of all the people. If other people have a lot of money, we also want to be rich. If all the people around us are poor , we never mind that we are very poor, too. we will not ashamed because of our folly. This is a social problem. If we never possess anything, we will not mind we lost some thing. Since we don’t want to be very rich ,we will not feel despond because poor. The protagonist of this novel is Pip (Handel)。 His parents died when he was a baby. His sister had brought him up ‘by hand’。 His sister married to Joe Gargery, the village blacksmith. They didn’t have much money, and Pip never went to school to study. But he was often very happy .Because all of his friends are like him. It isn’t very unfortunate to them, this is their lives. But by a chance, Pip helped a convict; he gave much food to him. Then he met Miss Havisham, a very strange old woman and she was very rich. Four years later, Miss Havisham wants Pip to be removed from his home and educated as a gentleman who expects inherit a fortune when he grow up. After hearing that . Pip started to despise his poor friends. He even feel ashamed because he live with the poor man . Pip’s ‘great expectations’ destroyed his life.
This novel told us that we cannot compare with others .Don’t feel envy at the others money. And if one day you be very rich , please don’t despise your poor friends.

I have to mention that again since I myself is one part of that group and I am not willing to take a subordinate role in both family and society. The character in this masterpiece left me the deep impression is Pip.He falls in love with Estella. He studied as hard as he could.Educating himself for her.Why did he love Estella so much? Just for her beautiful face? because she is pretty? She is rich? She is proud? In fact,I think Pip pay out so much for the love. She didnt treat him well and even that she didnt respect him at all! She put the food for him as a dog,but he didnt hate her. On the contrary,he left from his home and his friends. He just want to be a gentleman. He abandoned a lot than he got. I cant understand why he do it in this way. I think its not worth at all. If one person dont like you or not respect you,you neednt do everything for her. So it made me quite sad.I feel sorry for Pip. He had a very difficult life…
Miss Havisham is aslo a character who left me a deep impression. She was a pitiful lady. Her mother died young. Her farther was very rich and very proud.with only one child,Miss Havisham,by his first wife.In fact, she should have a nice life, but her wedding was destroied by her fiance. He broke her heart and she was angry. She want to retaliate all men.She was really a abject woman. But she chose a wrong way to continue her lifeShe wanted to hurt other persons. And she had done. This is no good for her.Only made her feel a little fortable.and there was more victims in the world.there are so many persons in the world.when they were hurt they want to hurt other innocent persons.Athough this is no good for them, but they did so.I do not know why they did so.Revenge?Made the world full of hateness. It is difficult to understand. Thats my thought.
《遠大前程》的英語讀后感 5
"Great Expectations" has been considered to be one of Charles Dickens’ most mature and relatively late works. Having experienced a wealth of human life,Dickens got a profound understanding of human-being,the surrounding environment and his life experiences while all his mature thinking and understanding were summarized into the book "Great Expectations". The original meaning of the work’s title in fact is a heritage, but when it was translated into Chinese it gave me an impression that the title shows the hero of the story had Great Expectations. However, reading over the book I realized that this "Great Expectations" takes an ironic band——it should be said that the theme of this work not only told the story of orphan Pip who wanted to be the ideal first-class disillusionment. If one does think so,he holds a wrong understanding of the great significance why Dickens creative the work. The hero Pip lived with his sister’s family. Though their life was hard,Pip didn’t wish to be a first-class per son his vision was to be a blacksmith like his brother-in-law,his sister’s husband. The reason why he changed his mind and was eager to be a first-class person later was the changing of environment——he met Miss Harvisham,Estella and some other plex people. As we know one of Dickenss philosophy thoughts is environment takes a deep impact to humans’ ideological and the story expresses his view that different environment creates different people. In short,I think the work was not arbitrarily written, but was based on the 10 works before aggregating Dickens’ thoughts. What is more,Dickens had put his outlook on life, his views of philosophy and ethics into the great creation. The story is divided into three phases of Pips life expectations. The first "expectation" is allotted 19 chapters, and the other two 20 chapters each in the 59-chapter work. In some editions, the chapter numbering reverts to Chapter One in each expectation, but the original publication and most modern editions number the chapters consecutively from one to 59. At the end of chapters 19 and 39,readers are formally notified that they have reached the conclusion of a phase of Pips expectations. In the first expectation,Pip lives a humble existence with his ill-tempered older sister and her strong but gentle husband,Joe Gargery. Pip is satisfied with this life and his warm friends until he is hired by Miss Havisham and Estella. From that time on,Pip aspires to leave behind his simple life and be a gentleman. This life is suddenly turned upside down when he is visited by a London attorney,Mr. Jaggers
The second stage of Pips expectations has Pip in London, learning the details of being a gentlemen, having tutors, fine clothing, and joining cultured society. At the end of this stage,Pip is introduced to his benefactor, again changing his world.
《遠大前程》的英語讀后感 6
After reading the whole book of “Great Expectations” written by Charles Dickens, I can’t find suitable words to express my thoughts completely. First of all, I am attracted by the excellent literary talent of Charles Dickens. The descriptions of the details are just right for the foundation of the background. The design of the story also brings me shock. To me, it is not only a good story, but also a lesson of the life that I am experiencing. But, what I have learnt from the book is not the main idea that Charles Dickens wanted to show. What impresses me deeply is only a supporting role ―Joe. Compared with the life of Pip, what Joe has experienced is so ordinary. He is an ordinary blacksmith, an ordinary husband, an ordinary brother, an ordinary friend, even an ordinary person! However, just such an ordinary person brings me a great special feeling. In his world, life is so simple. He is far away from the complex world which is polluted by the ugly soul of people. May be, “kind-hearted” is the biggest advantage of him, which is also the biggest shortage of him in his daily life. Different from all the other figures in the book, Joe’s life is so simple and his thoughts also stay pure after he experiences whatever sufferings that life gives him. In my opinion, his childhood is miserable. What he has experienced must be unhappy and sorrowful. He grows up in such a family, meets so much violence (May be, in that period, it is common)。To say it exaggeratedly, there must be bad influences on his young heart. But, what he does surprises me one more time. He treats his sufferings in another way―to be sincere.
I can’t really understand what he is thinking about, but I am deeply touched by his behavior. His tolerant with his wife―Pip’s sister, his friendly affection with Pip, even his sympathy with a prisoner that all express one thing ― sincerity. He is the harbor of soul for Pip. There is such a great difference between Joe and Pip’s ambition. What he tells us is that to be simple is the key to your happy life. Optimism is another spirit in his soul. He never gives in to the difficulties that he meets. Maybe, in his dictionary of life, there is no word with the meaning of shrinking back. He never worries about his lower grade life ,but faces up to it. For example, he only can read ”J” and ”O” before, because he has no chance to study in his childhood. But finally, he sets his mind to study and can write letters by himself. Although Joe is a person with only a little knowledge, what he owns is far more precious than many learned men. His pure heart will bring him great expectations. What he teaches us is that never to be taken away your pure heart and optimistic attitude towards life. There will be nothing difficult or miserable when you treat them with a sincere heart. To be simple, what you will gain is far beyond your imagination and you will find that life is just a game which is always filled with happiness and bliss!

《遠大前程》的英語讀后感 8
All that morning I was frightened that my sister would discover that I had stolen from her,but luckily she was so busy cleaning the house, and roasting the chickens for our Christmas lunch that she did not notice that I had been out,or that any food was missing. At half-past one our two guests arrived.Mr Wopsle had a large nose and a shining, bald forehead, and was the church clerk.Mr Pumblechook, who had a shop in the nearest town, was a fat,middle-aged man witn a mouth like a fish, and staring eyes.He was really Joes uncle but it was Mrs Joe who called him uncle.Every Christmas Day he arrived with two bottles of wine, handing them proudly to my sister.
‘Oh Uncle Pumblechook! This is kind!’she always replied.
‘Its no more than you deserve,’was the answer every time.
Sitting at table with these guests I would have felt uncomfortable even if I hadnt robbed my sister. Not only was Pumblechooks elbow in my eye,but I wasnt allowed to speak, and they gave me the worst pieces of meat.Even the chickens must have been ashamed of those parts of their bodies when they were alive. And worse than that, the adults never left me in peace.
‘Before we eat,let us thank God for the food in front of us,’said Mr Wopsle,in the deep voice he used in church.
‘Do you hear that?’whispered my sister to me.‘Be grateful!’
‘Especially,’said Mr Pumblechook firmly,‘be grateful, boy,to those who brought you up by hand.’
‘Why are the young never grateful?’wondered Mr Wopsle sadly.
‘Their characters are naturally bad,’answered Mr Pumblechook, and all three looked unpleasantly at me.
When there were guests,Joes position was even lower than usual(if that was possible),but he always tried to help me if he could.Sometimes he comforted me by giving me extra gravy. He did that now.
‘Just imagine, boy,’said Mr Pumblechook,‘if your sister hadnt brought you up—’
‘You listen to this,’said my sister to me crossly.
‘If,as I say,she hadnt spent her life looking after you, where would you be now?’
Joe offered me more gravy.
‘He was a lot of trouble to you, madam,’Mr Wopsle said sympathetically to my sister.
‘Trouble?’she cried.‘Trouble?’And then she started on a list of all my illnesses, accidents and crimes, while everybody except Joe looked at me with disgust.Joe added more gravy to the meat swimming on my plate, and I wanted to pull Mr Wopsles nose.
In the end Mrs Joe stopped for breath, and said to Mr Pumblechook,‘Have a little brandy, uncle. There is a bottle al-ready open.’
It had happened at last! Now she would discover I had stolen some brandy, and put water in the bottle.Mr Pumblechook held his glass up to the light, smiled importantly at it and drank it.When, immediately afterwards,he jumped up and began to rush round the room in a strange wild dance,we all stared at him in great surprise. Was he mad?I wondered if I had murdered him,but if so,how? At last he threw himself gasping into a chair, crying ‘Medicine!’Then I understood.Instead of filling up the brandy bottle with water,I had put Mrs Joes strongest and most unpleasant medicine in by mistake. That was what the big brown bottle contained.
‘But how could my medicine get into a brandy bottle?’asked my sister.Fortunately she had no time to find the answer,as Mr Pumblechook was calling for a hot rum to remove the taste of the medicine.‘And now,’she said, when the fat man was calmer,‘you must all try Uncle Pumblechooks pre-sent to us!A really delicious meat pie!’
‘Thats right,Mrs Joe!’said Mr Pumblechook, looking more cheerful now.‘ Bring in the pie!’
‘You shall have some,Pip,’said Joe kindly.
I knew what would happen next.I could not sit there any longer.I jumped down from the table, and ran out of the room.
But at the front door I ran straight into a group of soldiers.Mrs Joe was saying as she came out of the kitchen,‘The pie-has-gone!’but stopped when she saw the soldiers.
‘Excuse me,ladies and gentlemen,’said the officer in charge.‘Im here in the Kings name, and I want the black-smith.’
‘And why do you want him?’said my sister crossly.
‘Madam,’replied the officer Politely,‘speaking for myself,Id like the pleasure of meeting his fine wife.Speaking for the King,Id like him to repair these handcuffs.’
‘Ah,very good,very good!’ said Mr Pumblechook,clap-ping.
The soldiers waited in the kitchen while Joe lit the forge fire and started work.I began to feel better now that everyone had forgotten the missing pie.
‘How far are we from the marshes?’asked the officer.
‘About a mile,’replied Mrs Joe.
‘ Thats good.Well catch them before its dark.’
‘ Convicts,officer?’asked Mr Wopsle.
‘Yes,two escaped convicts out on the marshes.Has anyone here seen them?’
The others all shook their heads.Nobody asked me.When the handcuffs were ready,Joe suggested we should go with the soldiers, and as Mrs Joe was curious to know what happened, she agreed. So Joe,Mr wopsle and I walked behind the men through the village and out on to the marshes.
‘ I hope we dont find those poor men,Joe,’I whispered.
‘ I hope not either,Pip,’he whispered back.It was cold, with an east wind blowing from the sea,and it was getting dark.
Suddenly we all stopped. We heard shouts in the distance.
‘This way!Run!’the officer ordered, and we all rushed in that direction. The shouts became clearer.‘ Murder!’‘Escaped convict!’‘Help!’At last we discovered two men fighting each other. One was my convict, and the other was the man who had run away when I had seen him near the shelter.Somehow the soldiers held the men apart and put the hand-cuffs on them.
‘Here he is,Im holding him for you!’shouted my convict.
‘Officer,he tried to murder me!’cried the other man.His face was bleeding and he was clearly very frightened.
‘ Murder him! No,’said the first,‘ that would be too easy.I want him to suffer more, back on the prison-ship.Hes lying,as he did at our trial! You cant trust Compeyson!’
Just then he noticed me for the first time.I shook my head at him,to show that I had not wanted the soldiers to find him.He stared at me,but I did not know if he understood or not.
The prisoners were taken to the riverside, where a boat was waiting to take them on to the prison-ship.Just as he was about to leave,my convict said,‘Officer, after my escape,I stole some food, from the blacksmiths house.Bread, cheese, brandy and a meat pie.Im sorry I ate your pie, blacksmith.’
‘Im glad you did,’replied Joe kindly.‘ We dont know why youre a convict, but we wouldnt want you to die of hunger.’
The man rubbed his eyes with the back of his dirty hand.We watched the small boat carry him out to the middle of the river, where the great black prison-ship stood high out of the water, held by its rusty chains. He disappeared into the ship, and I thought that was the last I had seen of him.
