A. Useful expressions

1. diet n. sort of food that is usually eaten by a person or a community

The Chinese diet is considered to be the healthiest in the world.

2. change into

They eat different kinds of food which change into energy.

3. measure v. to find the size, length, volume, etc of something by comparing

with the standard unit.

The energy is measured in calories.

4. burn up -- use

While you are at school, or walking home, your body is burning up 100

calories an hour.

5. be rich, high /low, poor in

It is rich in fibre and low in sugar and fat.

Changde is rich in rice and fish.

7. put on / lose weight

They put on weight very easily.

8. in the form of 以 … 的形式/方式

Their diet contains a lot of fat in the form of potato crisps, potato chips, butter,

cream and chocolate.

They eat a lot of sugar in the form of cakes, soft drinks, sweets and so on.

10. scores of = very many, a large number of

11. die from/of

As a result, many Westerners die at an early age from heart illness.

12. get/be not good/poor value for money 花錢不合算，劃不(得)來，錢用

得不值

be是一種狀態，其主語是物。 get是一種動作，其主語是人

"It is not good value for money," one person said.

I got good value for money at that snack bar/cafe counter(快餐店).

13. in future

And I advise you not to eat fruit that isn’t ripe in future.

14. pain

I've got a pain here/in my left leg. *This place/My left leg hurts badly.

B. Sentence patterns:

1. because of + n. 或 doing sth

Because of this, they put on weight very easily.

He didn’t come to school yesterday because of being ill. = *He didn’t come to

school yesterday because he was ill.

2. advise sb (not) to do sth

I advise you not to eat fruit that isn’t ripe in future.

3. had better (not) do sth

You’d better have a good rest.

You’d better not go there alone.

4. suggest that …

I suggest that you drink plenty of water and have a good rest.

5. Why not do …? = Why don’t you do …?
